Suits, skirts and financial literacy
LeMaster Daniels professionals make an impact with high school students

Teenagers and financial literacy—not exactly two things that you would expect to see in the same sentence. But the WSCPA and Central Washington University’s Beta Alpha Psi group have set out to change that.
Each year, they invite local high school students to CWU’s campus for a day of education on financial stewardship, as well as tips on how to succeed in business. This year, LeMaster Daniels was given the opportunity to participate in the event which was attended by over 60 high school students and 20 accounting students.
Senior Accountant Karmelle Richards and HR Specialist Melanie Monek tackled the very important, although typically overlooked, topic of business attire. Both were immediately surprised by the students’ interest in the topic, and the flood of questions that came with each section of the presentation.
Karmelle shared her experience about the presentation:
“I was a little apprehensive about presenting to a group of high school students because of the fact that I wasn’t sure they would really want to hear what we had to say. I remember when I was their age and students would attend the events just to get out of school for the day. However, I felt that the message we gave provided them great information in an entertaining way.I thought the group was very interactive and genuinely interested in what we had to say. When we left that day I wasn’t sure of the impact we made, but I was sure hoping they’d use the information.
“Then, a couple of weeks later, here in Yakima, one of myco-workers was at a sporting event with her daughter when they happened to notice that a high school girl had a LD water bottle. She asked the girl where she got the bottle and the girl mentioned how she attended the Financial Symposium. She was very complimentary of our presentation and explained that she’d found the information very helpful.I guess you never should underestimate how a 30-minute presentation can impact a person and also how it helps promote LD.”
