Grandview

The city of Grandview, pop. 8,190, is that rare Western town that offers its residents immediate access to the out-of-doors and a way to make a good living.

Grandview, which is located south of Yakima, is home to a profitable food processing industry. The winemaker Chateau St. Michelle has a plant here, as do Perham Fruit Co. (est. 1909), Yakima Valley Grape Producers, Kenyon Zero Storage and AgriFrozen Foods. Millions of gallons of grape juice flow through here every year, and the Kenyon Zero Storage facility alone can accommodate more than 210,000,000 lbs. of frozen food.To satisfy demand, the community water system produces enough for a city of 30,000.

Railroads gave Grandview its start. When Washington's governor chose an old Indian trail through Naches Pass and the Yakima Valley as the best railroad route across the state, Grandview and a score of tiny communities sprang up in response.

Irrigation made Grandview happen: the first efforts to irrigate the desert land occurred in 1907, when the Washington Irrigation Co. staked out 1,000 acres for agricultural development. Despite sandstorms, rattlesnakes and jackrabbits, the town flourished and today is the heart of a vast, fertile agricultural basin.

Needless to say, hunting, fishing and outdoor pursuits are central to the Grandview lifestyle. Situated just north of the Columbia River Gorge-a recreation Mecca in its own right-and in the heart of Yakima Valley wine country, Grandview offers a unique opportunity for the individual who seeks a truly Western lifestyle.

"I enjoy the people in our office. I feel like we all care about one another and each other’s families. The flexible work schedule is wonderful – it allows me to be a mom when I really need to be there for my children." - Mary Omlin
