December 2004
The Yakima office was anything but laid back about raising funds for area children this year. Every month in 2004 they’ve had a Casual for Kids day where employees paid five dollars to dress in jeans at work, with part of the money going to the Salvation Army’s Project 300. The program takes underprivileged kids who are hand picked by teachers in the valley to go shopping for necessities such as coats, gloves and shoes. Funds also were donated to Operation Harvest. The office raised a total of $500.

Reach for the stars, they say. The Yakima office did just that for Christmas this year by picking 50 stars from the YMCA Stars program, each of which represents a child to buy a gift for.

“The YMCA was surprised when we asked for that many stars,” said Mary Albertson, a receptionist in the Yakima office. “But we always make sure every star we pick comes back with a great gift.”

Presents under the tree for YMCA Stars

The Quincy office participated in the Quincy Hospital Foundation’s first annual Festival of Trees, by decorating, displaying and auctioning a Christmas tree. The foundation, where David Thomsen and Dalene Kunkel serve as board members, invited five businesses to participate including L&D.

The crystal and glass stars, snowflakes and icicle décor, was inspired by a Crystal Clear Christmas theme. Several were involved in designing and decorating the tree including; Krista Allen, Carrie Durfee, Dalene Kunkel, Mary Omlin, Joanie Schwint, and David Lemon’s wife, Allyson.

The trees were displayed at the annual Quincy Christmas Bazaar on Dec 4 and then moved to the various sponsoring businesses, where viewers can buy raffle tickets.  The raffle drawing took place on Dec 16 at the Business After Hours social at Quincy Valley Medical Clinic.

Our Walla Walla office quenched their creative thirst again this year by sponsoring and decorating a table at the Annual Awards Banquet held for the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce on November 30, which honored the city’s most dedicated community volunteers.

Each year businesses sponsor and decorate a table and win prizes for their creative efforts. The Walla Walla team of employees picked a water theme for the table to go along with the banquet theme “Walla Walla, A Tribute to You.” (Walla Walla means “many waters”.) While L&D did not win the prize for best table, they had a wonderful time at the banquet, and were honored to once again be a part of the event.

Earlier this month, with hammers in hand, staff from the Tri-Cities worked with the Habitat for Humanity Project in Pasco. It was a great experience for all who participated.

Eileen Webber, administrative assistant in the Tri-Cities office commented, “We all learned a lot and were glad to be able to help out with this very worthy charitable cause.”

Participants included; Angela Saraceno, Darren Szendre, Dianna Propson and her husband John, Eileen Webber and her husband Rick, Jennifer Pena, Kraig Jones, Lee Colclasure and his wife Erin, Travis Lorton and his wife Andrea.

A group of employees in Spokane raised $1,000 for the Second Harvest Food Bank.  Heather Seiler, a supervisor at L&D, presented the check live on KREM-TV during the annual "Tom’s Turkey Drive" along with Pam Pyrc, director of marketing, Joni Garret and Tammy Turner, administrative assistants, and Betty Hubbard, executive assistant.

Another Spokane group made a donation to Crosswalk, a local organization that helps troubled teens. Alice Hardin, director of human resources, and Marie Royse, receptionist,

presented a $200 check to

the organization last Friday. Employees donated $100 and L&D matched the gift. The donation will help provide Christmas presents to the homeless teenagers. Crosswalk is a part of Volunteers of America. Marie suggested this charity saying, “I thought it would be a nice change. Something less known and in great need.”

October 2004

For the past several years, Betty Hubbard, Spokane/Corporate executive assistant, has dedicated her time to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery and this year serves as the Funding Development Board President. Betty was a part of the first ever Pumpkin Ball, a black tie fund-raising gala benefiting The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery and Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

The event drew about 600 people and welcomed local Spokane figures in the medical, business and sports communities. L&D also sponsored a table and several employees attended; Kevin Cox, (tax manager) and his wife Meagan, Brady Reed (staff accountant) and his wife Angela, and managers Melissa Labant, and Dan Frickle, who also played the piano at the event.
