Located in the heart of Washington's rugged north-central region it offers unbounded opportunity for recreation, from hunting and fishing to skiing (of both varieties), boating, hiking and snowmobiling. Diversity is the watchword in Omak, where a culturally diverse population enjoys an expanding and diversifying local economy. Portions of the community lie within the Colville Indian Reservation and the tribal influence is most visible each year at the Omak Stampede and World Famous Suicide Race, in which daring riders steer their brave steeds over a steep slope and across the Okanogan. The event, which attracts thousands of visitors from throughout the Northwest is always held on the second weekend in August and is accompanied by a four-day, sanctioned rodeo and Western and Native Art show. Agriculture has long been the mainstay of the area, which is rich in apple and pear orchards, and Hispanic workers have brought their own cultural influence to the community, which counts just over 4,400 residents. < Back to Locations |
