Wenatchee
In a state that prides itself on its physical beauty, the Wenatchee Valley is a superstar. The mighty Columbia River flows through the heart of town and the snow-capped Cascade range towers above it. Look eastward and giant basalt cliffs tower above the river chasm. Beyond them lie oceans of grains, stretching further than the eye can see.
The Wenatchee Valley is situated on the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers. Technically, there are two towns here: Wenatchee, in Chelan County, has a population of 24,530. Across the river, 5,430 residents live in the Douglas County town of East Wenatchee.
Home of some of the state's most productive fruit orchards, Wenatchee is the hub of a dynamic agricultural region. It's also the jumping-off point into the heart of North Central Washington state, one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate on the continent.
Recreation is king here. Area lakes and rivers teem with fish and ski boats. Eight area golf courses satisfy local duffers and the nearby Cascades are rich with recreational opportunities, including Alpine and Nordic skiing, camping, horseback riding and hunting and fishing. Mission Ridge, the premier ski hill in North Central Washington, is a 20-minute drive from town. Nearly 7,000 feet in elevation, it's known for the quality of its powder.
The high plateau tribes gathered in the valley to hunt and fish and the first white settlers arrived during the 1870s. The railroad arrived in 1897 and irrigation came in 1904. Agriculture is still a key player in the local economy; others include manufacturing, medical services, utilities and government services.
